Ice cream is typically made using cream, sugar, and flavoring. It is then cooled down until frozen, and it is whipped until it contains more than 50% of air than it once did. And now, the newest flavor of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream doesn’t only come with churned air, but a twist of politically liberal ideals.
Supporters of presidential candidate and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders will soon be able to sample the delicious taste of social and economic equality with Ben and Jerry’s new ice cream flavor, “Bernie’s Yearning.” The ice cream flavor features a milk chocolate disk, covering the top of plain mint ice cream.
As told by the description on the flavor’s website, the chocolate disk is meant to represent “the huge majority of economic gains that have gone to the top 1% since the end of the recession. Beneath it, is the rest of us.”
According to Pete Cohen, one of the co-founders of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and a long-time Sanders supporter, “Nothing is so unstoppable as a flavor whose time has finally come.”
And indeed, perhaps the time has come for the Vermont senator. Considering his favorable outcomes in the primaries, Sanders supporters have kept their hopes high and their proverbial spoons ready for Bernie’s Yearnings.
“Jerry and I have been constituents of Bernie Sanders for the last 30 years,” Cohen said on his website. “We’ve seen him in action and we believe in him.”
Unlike mass-produced flavors that regularly hit the shelves of grocery stores, “Bernie’s Yearning” was made specially in Cohen’s kitchen, using supplies purchased exclusively via the Sanders campaign.
Cohen’s belief in Sanders has even driven the founder to change the packaging itself. While Ben and Jerry’s ice cream typically read, “Vermont’s Finest,” the special edition ice cream instead reads, “Vermont’s finest Senator.”
To avoid the icy penalty of mass distribution laws, the limited edition flavor has no plans for mass sales, so it won’t have time to collect freezer burn (or “Bern”). Rather, it has been auctioned out through the Sanders campaign and has been made available via donation, with all proceeds going to the Sanders campaign directly.
