There Are Jewelry Cleaning Supplies Where You Least Expect It

The only two things the majority of consumers know about jewelry are that it looks good, and it should match their outfits. Why else would more than half (59%) of consumers say they agree with the statement, “When I’m buying jewelry, I appreciate informed advice from knowledgeable salespeople?”

So it should come as a surprise to most people that they don’t have to actually have to take their jewelry to get it cleaned, or buy expensive solutions to clean it. All that’s really needed to clean necklaces, bracelets and earrings are things found in most people’s kitchens.

The Huffington Post reports that ketchup, beer, and vodka are just a few of the surprising things that will make old, tarnished jewelry as good as new.

To polish tarnished silver, use ketchup. Submerge the piece of jewelry in need of a shining in a bowl of ketchup (yes, a bowl), and let it sit for five or nine minutes. Don’t leave it in for too long; otherwise the acid in the tomatoes and vinegar might cause some damage. Then, use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the condiment around before rinsing it off with warm water. Lastly, dry it off, and wear.

To make gold as good as new, pour some beer on to a clean cloth, and gently rub the gold. The shine will quickly return. Just be sure that the jewelry is solid gold, or gold plated without gemstones. Also, avoid dark beers. Light lagers or ales are best.

To get diamonds dazzling, pour some vodka onto a clean cloth and gently wipe the jewelry. It’s also possible to submerge the jewelry into the vodka, and wipe it down after it soaks for a while, if the piece is particularly dirty.

If the jewelry isn’t the highest-quality piece, then it might leave green stains on your skin, as is the case with copper rings. To prevent this from happening, you can apply a thin veneer of nail polish between the ring and your finger. The polish creates a barrier, preventing the ring from staining your finger.

It’s also worth noting that if you don’t have any of items in your house, you may have better things to do other than clean your jewelry, like going grocery shopping.
