The polygamist star of the TLC series Sister Wives is headed to divorce court.
But don’t worry, it’s just for one of his four wives. And here’s the kicker: she’s still with him.
Kody Brown, whose fundamentalist Mormon family has been on TV since 2010, has decided to split with Wife #1, Meri, in order to marry Wife #4, Robyn.
Brown has already held a ceremony with Robyn during the show’s first season.
Although Brown legally married Meri in 1990, his marriages to Christine, Janelle and Robyn all had to be of the spiritual sort only, as dictated by U.S. laws concerning polygamy.
Among all four marriages, the family includes 17 children, all of whom live in several connected living spaces with their respective mothers prior to the recent divorce. Brown has a teen daughter with Meri, six children each with Christine and Janelle and a son with Robyn, who had three children from a previous relationship.
According to a statement released to Entertainment Tonight, the family has “chosen to legally restructure.”
“We made this decision together as a family. We are grateful to our family, friends and fans for all their love and support,” the family said in their statement.
There’s no word on the official reasoning behind the split or whether the decision was mutual (also known as an uncontested divorce), but there can’t be too much of a rift between the couple if Meri is still around.
According to court documents, however, the process was fairly quick. Paperwork for the divorce was filed back in September 2014 and finalized just two weeks later.
HollywoodLife.com reports that Brown married Robyn (officially) in a ceremony last fall.
Rumor has it that tensions between Brown and Meri have long been high due to their inability to conceive more children together.
The new legal arrangement will also give Robyn’s children access to health care benefits and other necessities.
