The stainless steel trend has been rumored to be on the decline for several years now, and the introduction of black stainless steel could be the final nail in its coffin.
According to Consumer Reports, several large appliance manufacturer have unveiled black stainless steel versions of their most popular items, as regular stainless steel continues to see a sharp decrease in demand.
Experts say that stainless steel’s vulnerability to fingerprints and smudging is a major reason that homeowners are beginning to look for alternative materials. KitchenAid calls black stainless steel “a softer, warmer alternative to traditional stainless.”
Black stainless steel is also less reflective, while boasting a smoother look and feel. Its protective coating provides an added sense of luxury that many homeowners don’t feel is attainable with traditional stainless steel.
About 65% of homeowners still prefer stainless steel appliances, but industry experts expect that number to decrease as black stainless steel becomes more accessible. Some of the biggest brands on the planet are already racing to debut their own line of sleek appliances made from the new material.
According to CNet, Samsung just introduced their Black Stainless Steel Collection this month, featuring a four-door refrigerator, a top-control dishwasher, and an over-the-range microwave, all of which are finished with black stainless steel.
Samsung joined LG, KitchenAid, and GE in the black stainless steel market, and the fierce competition is no surprise. Homeowners are always on the lookout for chic ways to enhance their home’s aesthetic appeal, and it seems as though black stainless steel is the in-vogue trend of 2015.
“I love the look of black stainless steel and I would definitely spec it for my more modern and sleeker kitchen designs, particularly if the cabinetry is a medium or dark tone,” said interior designer Libby Langdon.
Designer Courtney Cachet also weighed in on black stainless steel, saying that these new appliances are “far more stylized than what’s coming out of the U.S. market.”
While some may dismiss black stainless steel appliances as a fad, the rave reviews from homeowners could mean that it’s here to stay for good.
