GMC Unveils All-New Heavy Duty Pickup Featuring Towing Technology

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are over 50,000 roadway accidents every year in the U.S. related to towing. Since towing heavy loads and large trailers is so dangerous, it’s important that people are extremely careful while driving, use the right safety tools, and drive a powerful vehicle. The global refrigerated trailer market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.8% between 2016 and 2022.

Though automatic transmission vehicles outnumber manual vehicles 10 to 1, manual trucks offer much better towing capabilities and sheer power than automatic vehicles.

According to The Detroit News, an extremely powerful new truck has just debuted on the auto market: the 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty pickup.

GMC’s behemoth Sierra 2500 and 3500 are getting significant upgrades less than a year after the brand redesigned the flagship Sierra 1500 light-duty pickup. Now, the 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty has all new bells and whistles, some truly innovative features, and extremely powerful towing capabilities.

“Sierra is our core,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC. “Making the launch of the all-new model is incredibly important and incredibly exciting.”

Additionally, as Driving Line reports, this new Heavy Duty truck is raising the bar when it comes to utilizing towing technology.

Starting with the truck’s engine, its 445hp and 910 lb-ft are very impressive. Its 6.6L Duramax turbo diesel is mated to the all-new 10-speed transmission, which is a first for the heavy-duty pickup segment. All this enables the Sierra to tow loads in excess of 30,000 lbs!

So how, exactly, did GMC choose to introduce this powerful new truck to the world? By towing much, much, much more than a measly 30,000 lbs.

According to TFLTruck, GMC chose to showcase its all-new 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty’s sheer power by pulling a 225,000-pound crane and boat. You can watch the unbelievable video here: GMC Sierra Heavy Duty towing 225,000 lbs!
