Tungsten comes in over a dozen different grades that can all be used for various applications. One of the most impressive applications, however, is brand new to the tungsten market: a 2018 Ram Limited Tungsten Edition.
According to the Detroit Free Press, in addition to platinum and gold vehicles, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will now offer tungsten as a version of its most luxurious Ram pickup truck ever manufactured.
“Tungsten is considered a rare metal and known as one of the toughest things found in nature,” said Mike Manley, head of Ram. “The dense, heavy metal has the highest melting point of all the elements and is harder than steel.”
Manley stated the durability of tungsten in a news release that focused on the fact that newly released luxury pickup trucks are now growing into a large portion of the auto market.
“The Limited Tungsten Edition is the highest trim level Ram has made available,” Manley added.
In addition to its high melting point, tungsten is also in between the density levels of lead and gold. The metal was originally discovered in 1781 but wasn’t applied to an industry for another 150 years, until 1931. Now, the metal can be found on the roads as part of the newest luxury vehicle from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
As Autoweek reports, Ram’s tungsten pickup will have its own set of satin-painted wheels and unique badging similar to its trim. The trim package will be available on the Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 models with several engine choices, including a 395-hp 5.7 liter V8 up to the much larger and impressive 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel.
Ram will offer both the two-wheel drive and the four-wheel drive, as well as a range of various cab and bed sizes.
